Spoiler warning: We’re talking about Charles and Horace, Sylvie threatening to go to the police, Kimmie’s drastic decision, Olivia’s deal and Horace’s medical bombshell.
Baby, Episode 4 is called “A Tender Betrayal,” but there is nothing tender about this family.
Everybody is either threatening to expose somebody, hiding a body, blackmailing a relative or trying to prevent somebody else from telling the truth.
At this point, the Bellaries don’t need a family tree.
They need an evidence board.
Charles Finally Stands Up to Horace
First, we clear up that shocking moment involving Charles and Horace.
Charles did not actually shoot his father. That was Charles imagining what he wanted to do while he was furious.
But the real conversation isn’t exactly peaceful.
Charles finally tells Horace he is done being ashamed of who he is and makes it clear that he loves Varney.
Horace still cannot accept it.
So Charles tells his father he wants him out of his life.
Horace basically says:
Fine by me.
Cold.
But honestly, Charles needed to draw that line.
This man has spent way too much time trying to earn love and approval from parents who seem determined to make everything harder.
Varney stays with Charles afterward and promises to help him deal with the bodies and Olivia’s blackmail.
But Varney also makes it clear that Charles has to start getting himself together.
Thank you.
Because covering up crimes can only take a relationship so far.
Sylvie Is DONE Keeping Quiet
Back at Horace’s house, the biggest explosion comes from Sylvie.
She cannot get over Glen’s death.
And more importantly, she cannot understand how everybody else expects her to simply keep living like nothing happened.
Sylvie confronts Rain and calls her a murderer for pushing Glen out of the window.
Rain insists she was trying to protect Sylvie.
But Sylvie doesn’t care anymore.
The guilt is eating that girl alive.
Then she announces that she wants to go to the police.
And you could practically hear every secret in that mansion scream.
Kimmie immediately knows how dangerous this is.
Because Sylvie talking doesn’t just affect Rain.
Once police start asking questions, there is no telling what else comes spilling out.
Kimmie Makes a VERY Kimmie Decision
Sylvie’s mother Leslie and Frank arrive to take her away.
Kimmie does not want Sylvie anywhere near Frank because of what he did to her in the past.
Horace reminds Kimmie that Leslie is Sylvie’s mother and Kimmie cannot simply stop her from leaving.
Technically true.
Kimmie responds the way Kimmie responds to most problems now:
She makes it somebody else’s deadly assignment.
Once she gets into the car with Mallory and Alex, Kimmie tells Alex to kill Frank.
There it is.
Remember when Kimmie was just trying to survive Delinda’s club?
That woman is gone.
Now Kimmie hears “problem” and starts outsourcing murder.
I understand why she wants Frank away from Sylvie.
But there is a LARGE amount of space between:
“Keep that man away from my sister”
and
“Kill him.”
Kimmie is becoming more Bellarie by the episode.
Varney Goes to Work on Olivia
Charles and Varney visit Olivia because they need to solve the little problem involving the dead men Charles has been trying to cover up.
Olivia still thinks she controls everything.
Even from jail.
Varney starts working on her because they need to know where the bodies are buried and what evidence might still exist.
Charles agrees to give Olivia the money she has been demanding, but only if the whole situation ends.
He wants the information.
He wants the bodies dealt with.
And he wants Olivia’s blackmail over.
Good luck.
Because if there is one thing Olivia understands, it’s how to make a problem last longer than necessary.
Still, Charles is finally trying to stop reacting emotionally and actually protect himself.
About time.
Rain May Want to Take Sylvie Seriously
Rain is in a dangerous position now.
She owns the club.
Gina is already breathing down her neck.
And now Sylvie wants to tell the police that Rain caused Glen’s death.
Rain believes she was protecting Sylvie when she pushed Glen away.
But intent doesn’t erase what happened.
And Sylvie is becoming increasingly unpredictable because she cannot carry that secret anymore.
Kimmie keeps trying to protect Rain.
But every time Kimmie “protects” somebody lately, another crime gets added to the list.
Maybe we need a new strategy.
Horace Gets One Wild Medical Revelation
Then Horace meets with the doctor who treated him overseas.
And THIS conversation changes everything.
Horace learns that his illness may not have progressed naturally.
The doctor tells him there are signs suggesting someone at the first hospital where he was treated was deliberately making his condition worse.
In other words:
Horace may have been getting poisoned through his own medical treatment.
Now Horace wants answers.
And revenge.
Of course he does.
Somebody apparently tried to slowly kill the richest, angriest man in this family and thought there would be no consequences.
That was optimistic.
The big question now is obvious:
Who wanted Horace dead badly enough to arrange something like that?
Considering the Bellarie family?

My Take
Episode 4 was less about action and more about secrets finally becoming too heavy to carry.
Sylvie is the biggest wildcard right now because she is DONE protecting everybody.
And honestly, I understand her.
Everybody keeps telling this young woman to stay quiet while the adults around her solve problems with money, threats and murder.
Eventually somebody is going to crack.
Charles finally standing up to Horace was overdue too. Horace has spent too long treating Charles like a disappointment instead of his son.
But Kimmie ordering Frank’s death?
That stood out the most to me.
Kimmie keeps saying she is protecting the people she loves, but her definition of protection is getting darker every episode.
